Bo McCarver is a community organizer and builder who has been in the forefront of the struggle against gentrification in East Austin. A Vietnam Vet born in Slaton, Texas, McCarver has masters degrees in journalism and fine arts and a Ph.D. in anthropology. McCarver personally builds -- and acquires and rehabs -- rundown houses. He is chair of the Blackland Community Development Corporation that has for 25 years provided affordable housing to diverse low-income households, and to senior citizens and individuals with disabilities -- and it hosts the only neighborhood-created program for homeless families in Texas, providing transitional housing and case management services. Blackland works to create innovative, environmentally friendly, and socially responsible housing.
